Artista em residência artistica no Roundabout: Lennard Houkes
Lennard perceives the human body and objects he makes as communication tools between the soul, the mind and the outside world. Starting from a material he creates objects from a sense or primal need to build.
He uses different ways of drawing. Sketching/building in space with charred wood, sewing home made charcoal to fabric or painting on ceramics sculptures he makes. His works come together in installations, or enjoy a life on their own.
He likes to interact with some of his creations in performances or let them be used by others.
Originally from the Netherlands Lennard feels most at home on the road. After living and working in London for two years he currently lives on the coast of Portugal. Commuting mainly between Lisbon and Amsterdam.

The figures or forms in my work are located between the world as I interpret it in this dimension and a self-invented other dimension. A theatrical ensemble, derived from bodies / body parts in communication with each other or certain situations that intrigue me.
My work usually has to do with consciousness. Everyone’s individual consciousness.The idea that we rarely find ourselves in the same dimension or interpret something as those with whom we closely live with intrigues me. Bodies that serve as a communication device between the mind and the outside world. Bodies dysfunction or do not feel at home in the dimension that they experience at that time. The mind is in a different one and difficult to reach. The body alienated, deformed, can be from the other person. It is between the moment here and one that is so far away that it is not accessible because of the influences of this world.
The choice of working with watercolour was first mainly the ease of use. Because I was traveling a lot after leaving art school ,the use of a small box of watercolours / a few brushes and a pad of paper was very easy. But the quick way I could give colour, depth and another dimension to my sketches worked addictive. Even after I rented a studio and was able to make bigger work, I didn’t want to say goodbye to working with water colours. The meditative effect while painting and the flow of shapes and colours made sure I could get a world on paper that was hidden somewhere inside and there was a calm and ease that came back that I experienced during my travels.

De figuren of vormen in mijn werk bevinden zich tussen de wereld zoals ik hem in deze dimensie interpreteer en een zelf verzonnen andere dimensie. Een theatraal samenspel, afgeleid van lichamen/lichaamsdelen in communicatie met elkaar of bepaalde situaties die me intrigeren.
Mijn werk heeft meestal met bewustzijn te maken. Een ieder zijn bewustzijn.
Het idee dat we ons zelden in dezelfde dimensie begeven of iets precies zo interpreteren als degenen met wie we nauw samenleven intrigeert mij. Lichamen die dienen als communicatiemiddel tussen de geest en de buitenwereld. Lichamen die disfunctioneren of zich niet thuis voelen in de dimensie die ze op dat ogenblik meemaken. De geest bevindt zich in een andere en is moeilijk bereikbaar. Het lichaam vervreemdt, vervormt, kan van de ander zijn. Het bevindt zich tussen het moment hier en een die zo ver weg is dat het niet met de invloeden van deze wereld te bereiken is.
De keuze voor het werken met aquarel was eerst voornamelijk het gebruiksgemak. Doordat ik na het verlaten van de kunstacademie veel onderweg was en verre reizen maakte was het gebruik van een klein doosje aquarel kleuren/een paar penselen en een blok papier heel gemakkelijk. Maar de snelle manier om kleur, diepte en een andere dimensie aan mijn schetsen te geven werkte verslavend. Zelfs nadat ik weer langer op 1 plek bleef en een werkruimte had waar ik groot kon werken wilde ik geen afstand doen van de waterkleuren. De meditatieve werking tijdens het schilderen en het door elkaar heen vloeien van vormen en kleuren zorgden ervoor dat ik een wereld op papier kon krijgen die ergens diep binnenin verscholen zat en er een rust terugkwam die ik tijdens mijn reizen ervoer.
